This overture, coming from Gazzaniga’s early period, is, like Il Calendrano (FE01), in a light, Italian style with a singing second subject and exciting passages for full orchestra. The slow movement, for strings alone, has more depth and pathos. The last movement returns to Italianate froth but with a particularly searching minor key episode.
