Here are five exquisite motets for choir unaccompanied. An original contribution to the rich Anglican choral heritage, these works are inspired gems.

Motet for double choir a capella
Vere Dominus est (September 2008) was commissioned by Christopher and Judith Lawrence and received its first performance at Norwich Cathedral’s Festival Service on May 10th 2009 given by the girls and men of the cathedral choir conducted by David Lowe. Set to interlaced English and Latin biblical texts from both Old and New Testaments the relationship between music and text is pure inspiration, whilst the music exhibits a beautiful and tightly woven thematic development.

Hush! The maiden mother bending composed in May 2012 is a setting of Christian verse by Gary Simons. The musical setting is moving, naïve, powerful and sophisticated.

Holy Baptisme (II) Op. 16 No 1
H. Baptisme (II) (George Herbert) (1992)
In just 62 bars this miniature gem transcends time and contemporary issues. Written during one evening in 1992 it’s humble, undemonstrative, quiet opening bars soon surprise both by an intensity and a unique bar-phrase construction, wherein each phrase, mirroring each verse of the poem, comprises exactly 15 bars, and within each phrase a variance in sub-divided phrase-lets thus:
6/4/5; 5/7/3; 6/4/3/2; 6/4/5; (2)
The motet was written originally as an SATB part-song, for four individual voices, and was first heard as such at the Baptism of Christy Barnard, the occasion for which it was composed, at Temple Church in May 1992.
We have this anecdote from the composer where he says candidly: “I was by this time trying with all my might to forge a career as a commissioned composer in England, in the throws of a prestigious commission from the ASMF (Divertimento). I awoke one morning in that pokey postage-stamp of a terraced house in Buckingham to the postman. A letter arrived from a good friend of my wife’s asking if I would like to write something for their daughter’s baptism. Feeling a bit sensitive, and rather peeved, I threw it down on the edge of my desk, furious, and got back to work, adamant I would have nothing to do with it. At 6pm that evening I was profoundly moved – wrote the piece there and then – and I have been eternally grateful to David and Jennifer Barnard ever since.”
You can listen to this motet, beautifully and expertly directed and sung by Choir of Trinity College Cambridge/Marlow, on the ‘Recordings Page’ at www.douglasweiland.com

Motet for double choir a capella
Christ hears our eucharistic Prayers Op. 52
Christ hears our eucharistic prayers (October 2012), the second of the ‘Simons’ set, is a short communion motet, moving, atmospheric.

Motet for double choir a capella
At the Inn Op. 53
At the Inn (Gary Simons), commissioned October 2012 by the author, is treated a little more homophonically than the others in the set. The piece was written in service and dedication to the men and women of Norwich Cathedral.
