Llandaff Cathedral was damaged during an air raid on January 2nd 1941. Restoration included the building of a new organ which was eventually completed in 1958. The Tuba stop had been donated by Howell’s School where I was Director of Music between 1971 and 1989. I wrote this setting of the carol for the school’s annual carol service in 1976, so it seemed appropriate to include a direction for the use of the Tuba pedal stop in the final bars of the original organ accompaniment.
The manuscript of the text is in the British Library. Its author is unknown and it is dated to around 1400, possibly belonging to a wandering minstrel.
