Berenice was first given at Covent Garden on the 18th. May 1737. It was a failure, with only 4 performances. Handel’s health was failing him at the time, his right arm was paralysed due to either a small stroke or severe rheumatism, and he was unable to conduct or play, (to considerable public concern). The beautiful Minuet in the overture has long been justly celebrated; Charles Burney described it as ‘happy and pleasing to an uncommon degree’.
