Like melodies, thoughts steal softly through my mind,
Blooming as spring flowers, they drift away like fragrance    

So begins this, the first of  the Fünf Lieder(op. 105) composed by Brahms in 1886. Less pianistic than most of his songs, Wie Melodien has transcribed beautifully for clarinet quintet, with its flowing melody and subtle modulations making for an evocative encore, and a fine companion piece to Clara Schumann’s Ich stand in dunklen Träumen (Fountayne Editions FE1080)
