Description
FE196 Rosalind Ellicott A Reverie for cello & piano [first publ. 1888]
The only source for Ellicott’s A Reverie is a copy of the published piano score in the British Library; the separate cello part does not appear to have been retained. The present edition reproduces that piano score, with a few small adjustments. A few accidentals have been added silently where they were clearly missing; some cautionary accidentals have been omitted as being superfluous; and some new cautionary accidentals have been added. The score offers very few dynamics, and a few have been added in square brackets here. Some dynamic markings appear to have been misplaced: bar 27 (the ‘f’ marking here brought forward by 2 beats); bar 36 (the ‘f’ marking on beat 3 appears to be erroneous); bar 60 (the ‘f’ marking here brought forward by 1 beat).
The work has been recorded by Joseph Spooner and Michael Jones on Romantics in England: Music for Cello and Piano (Dutton, CDLX7225). Ellicott’s Piano Trio no. 2 (of 1891) was recorded by the Summerhayes Piano Trio on English Romantic Trios (Meridian, CDE84478), and her Piano Trio no. 1 (of c.1889) by the Trio Anima Mundi on English Piano Trios (Divine Art, DDA2515).
