Her setting of Heine’s Ich stand in dunklen Träumen (“I stood in dark dreams”) is the first of six songs published as op.13 by Clara Schumann in 1844. Rather touchingly she and husband Robert would often write songs for one another as birthday or Christmas presents, four of the op.13 set being such offerings including this heartfelt song, which has happily transcribed into  a gift for clarinet quintet, and a fitting companion piece to Brahms’ Wie Melodien zieht es mir (Fountayne Editions FE1079)
