Sonata: (Allegro); (Adagio); (Allegro)
Il Trionfo del Tempo e della Verità was composed by Handel in Rome in 1707 and revised by him for performances in London’s Covent Garden in 1737 and then translated into English, revised again and presented, with new additions as The Triumph of Time and Truth in 1757. The overture is in the form of an Italian Sonata i.e. Fast-Slow-Fast. This energetic and invigorating piece is a delight from start to finish. The opening section, with florid passages for 2 solo violins, has trumpets as well as the more usual oboes and strings, the slow section is a beautiful oboe solo and the final section a foot-tapping triple time movement which swings along with great panache.
