This work is Henselt’s magnum opus and was published in 3 different versions, with orchestral accompaniment, for 2 pianos, and this version with the accompaniment of a string quintet. There is some evidence that it was also performed as an octet (by adding 2 more violins and 1 more viola) and this is confirmed by some “divisi” writing in the violin and viola parts.
