With its Libretto adapted from Dryden’s Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day of 1697, Alexander’s Feast or ‘The Power of Music’ opened in Covent Garden in February 1736 and ran for 5 performances. It was one of Handel’s biggest successes and it was performed a further 19 times in his lifetime in London and twice in Dublin. Such was its popularity that (unusually) the score was published in complete form by Walsh in 1738, and in the famous statue by Roubiliac erected in Vauxhall Gardens in the same year, Handel is depicted playing a lyre, reclining on a large score of Alexander’s Feast.
