Largo; Allegro; Andante
Alessandro Severo was first produced at the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket on 25th. February 1738, where it ran for 6 performances. It was a ‘Pasticcio’ i.e. the body of arias were assembled from 10 earlier Operas, but Handel wrote new recitatives and the splendid Overture here presented. In the French style, with the fugal section particularly closely worked, it ranks among the composer’s finest. The final movement, (surely a precursor of the Waltz?), with its lilting, gentle melody in 6ths. and dramatic contrasting forte unisons, is the product of a true master of the Theatre
