I originally wrote these miniatures for a young piano-playing friend, pitching them at an intermediate level of difficulty whilst trying to make something simple but evocative in various ways – garden flora and fauna (perhaps swaying shrubs and butterflies); the end of the spring wisteria; a pale winter moon reflected in the ripples of a lake (suggested by one of Linh’s paintings); and all the fun of the fair (with a fiddler playing fragments of a famous concerto) – now hoping they might be more widely enjoyed, by both young and not-so-young.
