Prelude: Larghetto   Chacconne;   Sarabande;   Gigue

Handel wrote Il Pastor Fido in 1712. In 1734 he revised it and included Terpsicore as a prologue. This was set for dancing or ballet with vocal numbers. This suite, which is in the French style, has been extracted from the complete prologue. The chaconne was is originally in the key of A major but has here been transposed to G major to create this suite in G. This edition by Anthony Robson is prepared from that published by Chrysander in 1890 as part of the complete Handel edition. The suite is written in 4 parts so, although there are solo passages indicated to be played by oboes and bassoons, it can be played by strings with solo players taking these passages.
