Belshazzar, to a libretto by Charles Jennens was premiered at the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket on the 27th. March 1745. It ran for 3 performances and was revived in 1749 and 1752.The overture is noted for it’s beautiful Corelli-like slow moving passages of rich harmony that come in complete contrast to the prevalent bustling semiquavers of the Allegro section.
