A hymn-like opening for strings alone is abruptly interrupted by rushing strings and a change to the minor mode. The listener is then thrust into the energetic and powerful Allegro. The music is thrown backwards and forwards from major to minor. A return of the hymn-like music in the major is followed by a further change back into the minor and the music drives powerfully through to the end.
