Larghetto; Allegro smanioso

Written for London in 1804 to a libretto by Da Ponte, the opening is so like Gilbert and Sullivan it really brings a smile. The Allegro smashes this light-hearted mood with powerful minor key music. The tension is kept up for so long you want to scream until eventually the music reaches the major and momentarily relaxes. But this doesn’t last long and the music is then driven right through to the end. This is the most relentlessly driven of all Winter’s overtures and this presumably because of the subject matter – the rape of Persephone.
