Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus

Rondo Alla Turca arranged by Stephen Storace

Stephen Storace (1762-1796), friend of Mozart and brother of Nancy Storace (Mozart’s first Susanna in the Marriage of Figaro), was the most successful composer of English Opera in the 18th Century. He met Mozart in Vienna where his two Italian operas, Gli Sposi malcontenti and Gli Equivoci (libretto by Da Ponte) were produced.

FE181           Mozart/Storace  Rondo alla turca for piano trio

Storace collected a substantial amount of music during his stay in Vienna. When he returned to England he embarked on an ambitious publishing project entitled Collection of Original Harpsichord Music. In fact the bulk of the music was for piano rather than harpsichord. From 1787 to 1789 it was published in installments as chamber music, so where the originals, as in this case, were for solo piano, he added the string parts. The collection also included Mozart’s Piano Quartet in E flat K493 and the first edition of the Piano Trio K564. Mozart must have sent Storace this work, as it hadn’t been written when Storace left Vienna.
