Howard, Gaynor  Sing Happy Child
FE4038  4 part choir and organ

During 1985, Howell’s School Llandaff celebrated the 150th anniversary of its foundation. The musical celebrations included a tour of Eastern Canada by the school’s Senior Choir which I conducted as Director of Music at the school. Following a reciprocal visit by another of her Canadian choirs, Barbara Clark, the conductor of the Ottawa Regional Youth Choir, suggested I write something for her Youth Choir, and “Sing Happy Child” was the result.

The poem was written by Eiluned Lewis who was born in 1900 in Newtown, which was then the county town of Montgomeryshire in central Wales. She spent her young life as a journalist in Fleet Street, contributing articles to periodicals, including Country Life magazine. Lectures and radio plays followed, and her novel “Dew on the Grass”, a memoir of childhood, won a number of prizes. ‘Morning Songs’ was a collection of poems. One of these bore the simple title, ‘Carol’. Eiluned’s daughter, Katrina Burnett, referring to ’ Sing, happy Child’ (the opening words of ‘Carol’) wrote’… What a marvellous and exciting setting….’ adding ‘…How thrilled my mother would be ….’
